Washington, Oct 22 (NationPress) US President Donald Trump hosted a remarkable Diwali celebration at the White House, where he referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “a great person” and expressed his affection for “the people of India.”

Attending the event were Indian Ambassador to the US Vinay Kwatra, the new US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. Prominent business leaders from the Indian diaspora also participated in the festivities.

Trump lit a diya in the Oval Office, calling it “a symbol of faith in the victory of light over darkness”, and extended his “warmest wishes to the people of India.”

“It's knowledge over ignorance and good over evil. During Diwali, celebrants remember ancient tales of enemies vanquished, barriers broken, and captives liberated. The glow of the diya serves as a reminder for us to pursue wisdom, work diligently, and always express gratitude for our many blessings,” he further stated.

The Indian Ambassador expressed gratitude to President Trump for hosting the Diwali festivities at the White House.

“Mr. President, let me begin by expressing profound gratitude for opening the White House, Oval Office, and your home to celebrate the festival of lights, embraced by one-fifth of humanity… This celebration showcases the strength of diversity. It’s truly an honor. On behalf of my Prime Minister and myself, I wish you and your family a very happy Diwali, especially to the 5 million-strong Indian diaspora in the US. I conclude with a wish that the light of Diwali continues to illuminate your success and the strength of India,” he remarked.

FBI Director Kash Patel, a prominent Indian American in the Trump administration, praised the President for commemorating Diwali at the White House.

“It’s an honor to be a first-generation Indian-American… Under your leadership, many millions of Americans are realizing their dreams. Celebrating Diwali in the Oval Office, which you described as a triumph of good over evil, is an incredible honor. Indian Americans globally are thrilled that you are such a significant leader in promoting this diversity,” he added.

During a conversation with reporters, Trump mentioned his recent discussion with Prime Minister Modi, stating the two nations are “working on some great deals.”

“I just spoke to your Prime Minister today. We had a fantastic conversation. We discussed trade and various matters, particularly focusing on trade. He is very interested in that,” he said.

Trump also reiterated that he has been assured that India is “not going to buy much oil from Russia.”

“We maintain a very good relationship, and he won’t be purchasing much oil from Russia. He desires to see the war end, particularly in Russia and Ukraine. As you know, they are significantly reducing their purchases,” he emphasized.

While India has started importing Russian oil in recent years, China remains the largest energy consumer from Moscow.

The Trump administration imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on India in August for acquiring Russian oil, while taking no action against China.

When questioned about imposing further tariffs on China for Russian energy purchases, Trump stated that Beijing would likely face 155 percent tariffs starting November 1 in retaliation for export controls on rare earths.

“As of November 1, China will be subject to approximately 155 percent tariffs. I don’t believe that’s sustainable for them. I want to maintain cordial relations with China, but they have been very tough on us,” he remarked.
