Mumbai, Oct 9 (NationPress) UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that New Delhi deserves its 'rightful place' on the UN Security Council, underscoring India's impressive growth narrative and its capacity to contribute significantly to global affairs.
Following his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Raj Bhavan, he passionately advocated for India's permanent membership in the UNSC.
"We envision India assuming its rightful position within the UNSC," he stated.
This viewpoint resonates with several nations, including the US, Germany, France, and Japan, all of whom have voiced strong support for India's UNSC aspirations.
Starmer's remarks signify an increasing acknowledgment of India's role in global governance and its contributions to multilateral efforts. His support mirrors sentiments expressed last September when then US President Biden, French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron, and he themselves backed India's inclusion alongside Germany, Japan, and Brazil to make the UN a more representative institution.
Additionally, Russia has recently endorsed India's candidacy, as Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed support for enhanced representation from Asia, Africa, and Latin America within the UN framework.
“The UK and India are united as global leaders in technology and innovation. We are excited to announce a partnership to produce Bollywood films in the UK following my inspiring studio visit yesterday, alongside our expanding collaboration in education,” stated PM Starmer.
He noted that he has brought “the largest trade delegation in a decade” to India, highlighting the significant business and investment opportunities arising from his visit. He aims to “intensify” the trade relationship between the two nations, emphasizing the importance of the bilateral trade agreement in their growing partnership.
Moreover, he praised the recent peace agreement regarding Gaza. “I wholeheartedly welcome the announcement regarding the initial phase of the Peace Plan in Gaza. This brings substantial relief. The UK is committed to supporting these essential initial measures and the subsequent phases of discussions to guarantee the complete enactment of the Peace Plan.
