Sanaa, April 9 (NationPress) The casualty figure from the recent US airstrikes on Yemen's Red Sea port city of Hodeidah has tragically increased to eight, which includes a pregnant woman. Additionally, 16 others have sustained injuries, according to a report from local health authorities released early on Wednesday.
Most of the deceased were women and children, as stated in the report.
The incident took place when US military aircraft targeted homes in the Amin Muqbil residential area late Tuesday night, as per health authorities and local eyewitnesses, who also shared video clips on social media following the airstrikes.
These attacks on Hodeidah are part of a larger operation consisting of 50 US airstrikes across northern Yemen, encompassing the capital Sanaa and the provinces of Amran, Dhamar, and Ibb, as detailed by Houthi-operated al-Masirah TV. The strikes were specifically aimed at telephone network infrastructures in Amran and Ibb, according to local residents.
This incident marks the latest escalation of US airstrikes since March 15, when the US renewed its operations aimed at preventing the Houthi movement from attacking Israel, following the breakdown of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
In a similar incident on Sunday night, US airstrikes targeted a residence in Sanaa, resulting in the deaths of four children and injuring 25 others, along with damage to several adjacent buildings.
Earlier that day, Yemen’s Houthis announced they had downed another US MQ-9 drone, marking the 18th since the conflict in Gaza escalated. The military group confirmed this information.
“Our air defenses successfully intercepted a US MQ-9 drone in the airspace of Al-Jawf province using a locally made surface-to-air missile,” stated the group’s spokesperson, Yahya Sarea, in a televised address broadcasted by Houthi-operated al-Masirah TV.
“This is the 18th US drone taken down by our air defenses since October 2023,” Sarea noted, highlighting the period when his group commenced retaliatory attacks on Israeli targets in solidarity with Palestinians following the onset of the Gaza conflict on October 7, 2023.
The last MQ-9 drone was reportedly brought down by Houthi forces over the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah on Thursday.
This class of drone has become familiar to Yemenis as it has been frequently observed flying over northern Yemeni provinces almost daily since October 2023.
