Sanaa, April 10 (NationPress) The death toll from recent US airstrikes on Yemen's capital Sanaa has increased to three, with numerous others injured, according to medical personnel and health officials speaking to Xinhua.

The airstrikes took place in the Al-Nahdayn area, which is encircled by densely populated neighborhoods, on Wednesday night.

Shrapnel damaged numerous homes and shattered windows, leading to the fatalities of three residents. Several injured civilians were quickly transported to medical facilities.

This marks the most recent escalation of US airstrikes on northern Yemen since the US military recommenced operations against the Houthi group on March 15 in an effort to prevent the group from targeting Israel and US warships in the northern Red Sea.

The airstrikes also affected multiple sites in other northern regions late on Wednesday, including the port city of Hodeidah and Kamaran Island, where no casualties have been reported as of yet.

The US military has not yet issued a statement, according to Xinhua news agency.

Previously, on April 9, the Houthis claimed they had successfully downed another US MQ-9 drone, marking the 18th such incident since the onset of the conflict in Gaza, as stated by the military faction.

"Our air defenses intercepted a US MQ-9 drone over the Al-Jawf province, utilizing a locally developed surface-to-air missile," said the group's spokesperson, Yahya Sarea, in a televised address broadcast by Houthi-operated al-Masirah TV.

"This is the 18th US drone downed by our defenses since October 2023," Sarea noted, referencing the period when the group began its attacks on Israeli targets to express solidarity with Palestinians shortly after the conflict in Gaza erupted on October 7, 2023.

The most recent MQ-9 was reportedly brought down by Houthi forces on Thursday above the port city of Hodeidah.

This type of drone has become familiar to Yemenis, as it has been frequently observed flying over northern Yemeni provinces almost daily since October 2023.

The Houthis, who govern much of northern Yemen, have been conducting regular rocket and drone assaults against Israel and hindering "Israeli-linked" shipping in the Red Sea since November 2023, demonstrating solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip amid their ongoing conflict with Israelis.
