Aadhaar App crosses 4 crore downloads, 1.91 crore biometric locks used
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The government-backed Aadhaar App has surpassed 4 crore (40 million) downloads, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced on Saturday, 18 July, underscoring rapid adoption of digital identity services across India. The milestone reflects a significant shift in how residents manage their Aadhaar credentials — from physical enrolment centres to a smartphone-first model.
Key Services Driving Adoption
According to MeitY, the app functions as a single-window platform for a range of Aadhaar-linked services. These include address updates, mobile number and email registration, biometric lock and unlock, and e-Aadhaar downloads — all accessible without visiting an enrolment centre.
Since its launch, the app has facilitated over 11.65 lakh address updates and nearly 49 lakh mobile number updates, allowing residents to keep their identity records current from home.
Email Update Feature Gains Quick Traction
The email update feature, introduced on 1 July, has already seen around 12.5 lakh email addresses added or updated through the app. Notably, the service — which previously cost ₹75 — has been made free until 31 December 2026 on the Aadhaar App. Within the first two days of the feature's launch, more than 2.5 lakh residents had already updated their email IDs, signalling strong early demand.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) enabled this facility directly through the app, eliminating the need for in-person visits.
Privacy and Security Features See Strong Use
The app's Biometric Lock/Unlock feature has been used more than 1.91 crore times, making it one of the most-used functions on the platform. The feature allows Aadhaar holders to instantly lock or unlock their biometrics, adding a layer of protection against potential misuse of their identity data.
This comes amid growing public awareness around digital identity security, with residents increasingly seeking tools to control access to their biometric information.
Alignment with Digital India Mission
MeitY said the Aadhaar App is designed to provide a 'privacy-first and secure' way for residents to show, share, and verify their identity. The ministry positioned the app's growth as a direct contribution to the Digital India Mission and the broader Viksit Bharat vision.
With biometric lock usage crossing 1.91 crore and email updates accelerating, the platform's trajectory suggests that convenience and security — not just necessity — are now driving Aadhaar engagement. Whether UIDAI can sustain this momentum beyond the free-service window ending in December will be a key test of long-term adoption.
