Aadhaar authentication mandatory for subsidised LPG from Oct 1, 2026
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Domestic LPG consumers across India will be required to complete Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA) to continue booking cooking gas refills at the regulated subsidised price from 1 October 2026, according to an official statement released on Saturday, 19 September 2026. The directive, issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, marks a firm deadline on a process that has been under nationwide rollout since October 2023.
Why the Government Is Acting Now
The stated objective of the mandate is twofold: eliminating duplicate and ineligible LPG connections, and curbing the diversion of subsidised domestic cylinders for commercial or industrial use. Officials noted that directing subsidies only to verified beneficiaries is critical to sustaining the programme amid growing under-recoveries borne by public sector oil marketing companies. The implicit subsidy on a 14.2-kg domestic cylinder stood at approximately ₹210 in September 2026.
Who Has Already Completed Authentication
According to official data, 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers — representing nearly 90% of the total consumer base — had completed biometric Aadhaar authentication as of 19 September 2026. Consumers who have already finished the process will not need to repeat it and can continue booking refills without interruption.
How to Complete the Authentication Process
Consumers yet to authenticate have several options. The process can be completed during cylinder delivery via a mobile application operated by the delivery personnel, or directly at LPG distributor showrooms. Oil marketing company apps also support authentication: Indane customers can use IndianOil ONE, Bharatgas consumers can access HelloBPCL, and HP Gas users can complete it through HP PAY.
What Happens If You Opt Out
Consumers who choose not to complete BAA will continue to receive LPG supplies, but only at the applicable market price without subsidy. Such consumers must register their preference through their respective oil marketing company's digital platforms — including web portals, mobile apps, WhatsApp chatbots, or IVRS systems. They will be supplied 5-kg or 10-kg cylinders, subject to local availability.
Outreach and Awareness Campaign
The government noted that oil marketing companies have been running a nationwide outreach campaign since October 2023, employing SMS and WhatsApp messages, field visits by distributors and delivery staff, special enrolment camps, IVRS reminders, and awareness drives across digital and traditional media channels. With roughly one in ten consumers still to authenticate, the final push before the 1 October deadline will be closely watched by both policymakers and subsidy-dependent households.
