AAP Punjab Urges Against Municipal Elections During Martyrdom Week

Chandigarh, Dec 2 (NationPress) The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday made a formal appeal to the Punjab Election Commission, urging them not to conduct municipal elections during the martyrdom week dedicated to the sons of Guru Gobind Singh.

AAP President Aman Arora emphasized that Shaheedi Week holds profound emotional significance for the residents of the state, and the Election Commission should consider this before finalizing election dates.

The day known as Veer Bal Diwas, which honors the four sons of Guru Gobind Singh, is commemorated on December 26.

Arora highlighted that the party has voiced its concerns regarding this issue to the Chief Electoral Officer. Several political factions and religious groups have also expressed their views on this matter. “Respecting the religious sentiments of the populace is paramount, and AAP firmly believes that elections should not occur during Shaheedi Week,” he stated in a press release.

He remarked that the sacrifice of Guru Gobind Singh’s younger sons, Sahibzada Fateh Singh and Sahibzada Zorawar Singh, is significant not just for Sikhism but is also a crucial part of the nation’s history. Their martyrdom serves as a source of inspiration for everyone.

Arora noted that their unparalleled sacrifice at such a tender age for religion and society is unmatched throughout history.

During Shaheedi Week, a somber atmosphere prevails across Punjab: “The remembrance of the younger Sahibzadas’ martyrdom brings great sadness to the people. At this time, many even choose to sleep on the ground, regardless of the harsh winter. No celebratory events or auspicious activities occur during this period. Therefore, the Election Commission should give utmost consideration to these elements and honor the sentiments of the ‘sangat’ when determining election dates,”

he elaborated.

Arora also mentioned that although the High Court has issued strict directives concerning municipal elections, which has placed the Election Commission in a challenging position, it is imperative for the Commission to comply with the court's orders while also being sensitive to the public's emotions when scheduling election dates.
