Adani Wind Launches Innovative 5 MW Wind Turbine Prototype in Mundra
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, April 15 (NationPress) Adani Wind has successfully launched a groundbreaking 5-megawatt (MW) wind turbine prototype with a 185-metre rotor diameter at Mundra, Gujarat. This turbine features some of the largest wind blades in India, contributing significantly to the upcoming generation of turbine technologies in the nation.
This installation is a pivotal advancement in India’s shift towards higher-capacity wind energy solutions, as developers aim to maximize output while navigating the challenges of limited land availability.
The Adani Wind prototype incorporates a 91.2-metre blade paired with a 185-metre rotor diameter, making it one of the most expansive systems in India. With a sweeping area of 26,600 square metres, this turbine is optimized for low to medium wind speeds, enhancing energy capture and overall efficiency.
Developed through a partnership between Adani Wind’s engineering teams in India and WindtoEnergy from Germany, this 5 MW platform is specifically designed to meet local operational demands.
With the introduction of this new model, Adani Wind is prepared to serve a broader range of low to medium-wind sites throughout the country. Currently, four of its existing models are already recognized by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) under its Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). Certification for the new model is anticipated in the upcoming months.
As per the recent ALMM update from MNRE dated April 2, a total of 15 wind turbine manufacturers in India have received approval. Among the top-rated models are a 5.3 MW turbine from Venwind Refex Power, a 5.2 MW variant from Adani Wind, a 5 MW turbine from Envision, and a 4 MW model from SANY, illustrating the industry's shift towards higher-capacity machinery.
India's wind manufacturing sector has seen rapid growth, with domestic capacity increasing from approximately 12 gigawatts (GW) in 2022 to nearly 20 GW. This expansion encompasses nacelles, blades, towers, and essential components, establishing India as a competitive player in the global clean energy supply chain.
According to BloombergNEF, global wind installations achieved a record 169 GW in 2025, marking the third consecutive year of growth, a 38% increase from the previous year. While China continues to lead, India has positioned itself as the largest market outside of China, surpassing both the US and Germany. Notably, Adani Wind is featured as India’s sole wind turbine manufacturer in BloombergNEF’s global Top 15, highlighting India's expanding role in the clean energy sector.
Currently, India ranks fourth worldwide in total installed wind capacity, with about 55 GW operational and an estimated potential exceeding 1,100 GW. The Global Wind Energy Council projects that if annual installations reach 15 GW by 2030, India could represent around 10% of global wind turbine demand.
The installation at Mundra is indicative of broader investments aimed at scaling manufacturing. Adani Wind has announced plans to double its capacity from 2.25 GW to 5 GW annually, with a long-term goal of reaching 10 GW.
The company is also engaging globally, exporting blade sets to Europe with advanced anti-icing technology, while exploring opportunities in markets such as the US, Australia, Brazil, and Southeast Asia.
With a strong focus on automation, robotics, and recyclable materials, India’s wind manufacturing industry is increasingly aligning with international standards.
