How is Ahmedabad Enhancing Sports and Urban Facilities for CWG 2030?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, Jan 30 (NationPress) As the city gears up for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, Ahmedabad is fast-tracking the enhancement of its sports and civic facilities, which includes the establishment of new international-grade venues and extensive urban improvements, as stated by Standing Committee chairman Devang Dani on Friday.
After the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC)'s weekly meeting, Dani informed the press that the preparations for the Commonwealth Games have injected new life into the city's sports infrastructure.
“An international-standard sports complex has already been constructed in Naranpura, and with the Commonwealth Games in sight, the municipal corporation is persistently enhancing the facilities for various sports,” he remarked.
He mentioned that four cricket grounds have been set up in diverse locations across the city, and a new sports complex at Vastral in the eastern sector has been finalized, featuring a football ground that meets international standards.
“The football facility at Vastral boasts sprinkler-based turf, movable goalposts, and a single-track running area. Beyond cricket, our aim is to foster football and other sports, enabling the youth of Ahmedabad and Gujarat to excel in sports,” Dani stated.
In addition to sports infrastructure, the chairman highlighted significant civic projects to accommodate the city’s expanding population.
An extra 468 million liters per day of Narmada water has been sanctioned by the Narmada Nigam following representations to Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
“Rapid vertical development and a rising population in high-rise buildings have led to water shortages in some areas. This additional allocation will benefit approximately 18 to 20 lakh residents in the North-West, South-West, and West zones,” Dani explained.
Areas such as Gota, Vastrapur, Thaltej, Bhat, Sola, Jodhpur, and Vejalpur will see enhanced water supply, he added.
Regarding urban infrastructure, Dani noted that the Standing Committee has authorized the sale of a multi-level parking structure in Prahladnagar along with the associated land parcel after previous tenders received no bidders.
“Once we obtain board approval, new tenders will be issued, and the upset value will be established by the AMC land committee,” he stated.
He also mentioned that a new water tank in Isanpur has been approved to resolve longstanding water supply issues.
“Some trees are obstructing this project, but they will be relocated under the ‘Mission Million Tree’ initiative to ensure the city’s green cover continues to expand,” Dani remarked.
Addressing traffic challenges, Dani indicated that the AMC intends to upgrade over 100 junctions using AI-based systems.
“With increasing traffic volumes, we are enhancing junctions, allowing left turns where possible, and collaborating with traffic police to alleviate congestion and save time for citizens,” he said.
Dani also pointed out that the Ahmedabad International Flower Show, which was inaugurated on January 1 by Chief Minister Patel, attracted more than 11.6 lakh visitors.
“The flower show generated over Rs 13.50 crore from ticket sales, sponsorships, and stall auctions, highlighting the rising public engagement in such city events,” he added.
