Is Andhra's Coalition Government Silencing the Opposition?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Amaravati, Feb 13 (NationPress) The former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and President of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, has leveled accusations against the coalition government led by the Telugu Desam Party for attempting to suppress the Opposition.
On Thursday, he claimed that the state government is intentionally withholding recognition of YSRCP as the primary opposition party, thereby stifling its voice.
During a meeting with MLAs and MLCs at the YSRCP's central office, Jagan Mohan Reddy provided explicit instructions on how party members should conduct themselves in the Assembly and Council sessions.
He pointed out that despite YSR Congress being the sole opposition in the legislature, the party is not allocated sufficient time, compelling it to address public concerns through the media.
He emphasized the importance of utilizing the Council effectively, urging members to thoroughly study every topic, come prepared, and present facts and evidence.
Strong preparation is essential to hold the government accountable, he urged, while encouraging members to highlight the difficulties faced by the public and challenge every failure without hesitation.
Referring to the Tirupati laddu controversy, he stated that the attacks and legal actions against various leaders stem from their questioning of the state government.
He noted that the reintroduction of rejected ghee tankers into the system occurred after the government change and that clarifications must be provided by the current administration.
He recalled that established testing protocols existed within the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) and mentioned that tankers had been previously rejected as well.
Labeling the current TDP-led administration as a 'chain of scams', Jagan Mohan Reddy accused them of allocating valuable land in Visakhapatnam to relatives of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
He urged YSRCP members to vigorously advocate in the Council, work diligently, and maintain connections with the populace.
As time progresses, committed party workers will receive the recognition they deserve, he stated.
Earlier, MLC Lella Appi Reddy remarked that the state government is reluctant to acknowledge YSRCP's opposition status as it fears being held accountable in the Assembly and Council, and cannot bear the public's voice on significant issues.
He claimed that governance in the state is being conducted in a 'cash–Lokesh–suitcase' manner and asserted that YSRCP will robustly confront the government's failures and unfair practices in the Legislative Council.
He mentioned that YSRCP would address issues ranging from the unjust arrest of Ambati Rambabu to what he described as fabricated cases against YSRCP leaders.
Regarding the Tirumala laddu matter, he expressed that Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has offended Hindu devotees and must apologize.
He reiterated that during the YSRCP administration, ghee tankers that failed to meet quality standards were returned, with proper documentation available for verification.
He added that investigative findings have shown that substandard ghee supplies occurred during Chandrababu Naidu's previous term as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.
