Assam Chief Minister Plans One University and One Medical College for Each District

Guwahati, Dec 11 (NationPress) Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed on Wednesday that every district in Assam will feature one university and one medical college.

During a press conference, Sarma emphasized that Assam is experiencing rapid development.

He stated, “It is a remarkable achievement that at least 80 lakh individuals have been lifted out of poverty in recent years. The state administration has made health and education top priorities. Several colleges have been upgraded to universities under the current government.”

According to the Chief Minister, the government is in the process of constructing 23 medical colleges, with plans to initiate work on three additional colleges within a year.

“For a long time, there were only three medical colleges while the Congress was in power. We are now establishing 23 medical colleges throughout the state, and we aim to commence construction on three more in the districts of Darang, Hojai, and Hailakandi in the upcoming year,” he mentioned.

Sarma noted that there is at least one university in each district accessible across the entirety of Assam.

“We have set up universities in Hojai, Nagaon, Cachar, Bajali, and Lakhimpur—almost every district in the state has a university either under construction or completed,” he added.

The Chief Minister further stated that the government is also working on building a bridge across the Brahmaputra in every district.

He remarked, “Alongside universities and medical colleges, we are constructing bridges over the Brahmaputra River. No one could have anticipated that Assam would advance so swiftly. We are on track to become one of the developed states in the country.”

In addition, the CM announced that various grants and assistance will be provided under different government schemes over the next 12 days throughout the state. This series of initiatives was launched by him on Wednesday.

Under the microfinance incentive and relief program, over 78,000 borrowers will benefit from the state government’s relief package, which aims to restore their creditworthiness and provide financial stability.

The CM mentioned, “In the next 12 days, more than 3.23 lakh bicycles will be distributed to school students across the state, along with 48,673 scooters for meritorious students under various schemes.”

Nearly 27,000 top achievers in the Class 10 examinations will receive cash awards, Sarma announced.

Furthermore, the state government will distribute Rs 353.67 crore to 6.86 lakh families affected by disasters to assist in the reconstruction of their homes and meet their basic needs along with essential supplies.

Sarma added, “6,490 Self Help Groups (SHG) will receive Rs 21.90 crore to establish food processing units.”
