Bhopal, Aug 9 (NationPress) In a significant advancement towards self-sufficient infrastructure development, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to inaugurate a cutting-edge railway coach manufacturing facility in Madhya Pradesh’s Raisen district this Sunday.
The establishment, backed by a projected investment of Rs 1,800 crore from Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), aims to produce coaches for Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, and metro trains. This endeavor is a notable achievement for Madhya Pradesh and aligns with the country’s aspirations in rail manufacturing.
Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav remarked prior to the ceremony that this initiative embodies Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of enhancing indigenous manufacturing as part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
“For the first time, our state will manufacture and supply train and metro coaches on a national and global scale,” he stated, highlighting the pride this brings to Madhya Pradesh.
The facility will be constructed in Umaria village of Goharganj tehsil, near Obedullaganj, covering an area of 148 acres and is anticipated to create employment opportunities for nearly 5,000 individuals, comprising both direct and indirect jobs.
Initially, the plant will produce between 125 to 200 coaches annually, with plans to escalate production to over 1,000 coaches within five years.
This facility is strategically located to aid Indian Railways’ ambitious goal of rolling out 500 new Vande Bharat trains by 2030 and to cater to the increasing demand for metro coaches in tier-2 cities.
Furthermore, it will diminish dependency on imported rolling stock and foster domestic engineering prowess. Chief Minister Yadav emphasized that this project will positively impact the regional economy, stimulating the growth of ancillary industries in Raisen and Bhopal districts.
These industries include suppliers of bogies, interiors, air-conditioning systems, and other essential components for coach manufacturing. A dedicated rail coach technology institute is also being contemplated to support skill enhancement and technical training in the area.
BEML, a leading public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Defence, brings with it decades of experience in aerospace, mining, and metro coach manufacturing.
Its expansion into Raisen signifies a strategic integration of defence-grade precision with civilian infrastructure needs.
The new unit will complement BEML’s existing manufacturing centers in Bengaluru, Palakkad, and Kolar Gold Fields and is poised to significantly contribute to India’s rail export capacity.
The foundation stone ceremony will be graced by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, along with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on-site, while Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is expected to join virtually.
“This project is more than just a factory—it is a future-ready, globally competitive ecosystem,” stated Chief Minister Yadav. “It firmly places Madhya Pradesh on the railway manufacturing map and reinforces our dedication to Atmanirbhar Bharat.
The railway coach manufacturing unit is set to become a fundamental element in India's infrastructure growth narrative, merging technological innovation with regional development and national pride.
