Why is the Bengal Government Urging ECI to Revoke Transfer Order of Bureaucrats?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 29 (NationPress) On Thursday, the government of West Bengal formally appealed to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to retract its recent directive, which halted the transfers of three Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers currently on temporary assignment with the election body for the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) in the state.
Earlier this week, ECI Secretary Sujeet Kumar Mishra communicated with Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty, instructing a freeze on the transfers of the IAS officers: Asvini Kumar Yadav, Randhir Kumar, and Smita Pandey.
In his correspondence, Mishra emphasized that the Chief Secretary should ensure that no personnel engaged in the SIR process undergoes transfer without obtaining prior consent from the Commission.
Sources within the state Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office indicated that the government, in its response on Thursday, sought to clarify the rationale behind the departmental transfers of these officers.
According to the state's explanation, given the involvement of the three IAS officers in the revision task, the government opted to assign them lighter departmental roles to alleviate their workload, which led to the transfers.
It remains to be seen if the Commission will acknowledge the state government's request or uphold its original decision.
Since the commencement of the SIR process, there have been multiple disputes between the Commission and the West Bengal government on various matters, with significant issues arising, including the suspension of two electoral registration officers (EROs) and two assistant electoral registration officers (AEROs), along with the filing of FIRs against them.
Now, the halt on the departmental transfers of these three bureaucrats marks the latest chapter in this ongoing conflict.
