Bengaluru, Sep 26 (NationPress) - The Karnataka Police have taken swift action by arresting two individuals for assaulting a woman from Andhra Pradesh, who was accused of stealing sarees in Bengaluru. The apprehended individuals are identified as shopkeeper Umedram and his 25-year-old aide, Mahendra Sirvi. Additionally, the woman, Hampamma, was also arrested for her alleged theft from the store.

DCP West Division S. Girish reported on Thursday that, "The incident transpired on September 21 within the jurisdiction of the City Market police station. A video lasting 1.54 minutes of the assault has gained significant traction on social media, raising alarm among the public."

In the disturbing footage, the accused Umedram is seen dragging the woman along the pavement outside his shop on Avenue Road, while both assailants repeatedly slapped, kicked, and struck her in a public setting.

The shopkeeper accused the woman of stealing sarees valued at Rs 91,500 from his establishment and claimed to have caught her in the act as she attempted to steal again. Police later arrested the woman and managed to recover some of the stolen merchandise.

According to law enforcement, the accused contacted the police helpline post-assault, alleging that the woman was caught stealing a bundle of sarees. A Hoysala patrol unit responded promptly and confiscated the stolen items. Subsequently, the woman was placed under judicial custody.

The woman, Hampamma, is originally from Guntakal in Andhra Pradesh. The police acted swiftly, apprehending the shopkeeper and his aide, who were also remanded to judicial custody. A case has been filed under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act.

In a related incident of moral policing on September 22 in Indiranagar layout near Bengaluru, a group of men allegedly assaulted their female relative and a man from another community, partially shaving their heads in public. The police were quick to intervene and control the situation, arresting five out of the seven accused, who now face multiple charges under various Sections of the BNS.

The female victim, a mother of one, had been married for 15 years but separated from her husband six months ago after he discovered her alleged affair with a fisherman from a different community.

Point of View

It is crucial to highlight that while theft is a serious offense, the manner in which justice is sought can never justify physical violence. This incident not only raises concerns about the policing of morality but also reflects on the broader societal issues of justice and fairness. The law must prevail, and each case must be handled with due process to uphold the integrity of our legal system.
