PM SVANidhi scheme transforms Bengaluru vendor T.S. Ningamma's life
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
T.S. Ningamma, a street food vendor from Bengaluru, once struggled to make ends meet, relying on household utensils and a makeshift table to sell food. Today, she runs a thriving idli, dosa and sambhar stall, employs workers, and funds her three children's education — a turnaround she credits entirely to the PM SVANidhi micro-credit scheme.
From Penury to a Thriving Food Business
Ningamma's journey began with a ₹10,000 loan under PM SVANidhi, which she used to purchase a cart and basic utensils. As business picked up, she graduated to a ₹20,000 loan, using it to hire workers and expand operations. A third loan of ₹50,000 allowed her to further upgrade the stall and improve the family's overall quality of life.
'Before taking the loan, I didn't have anything to start the shop. I was making things with the utensils I had at home and putting them on a table. I took a loan of ₹10,000. With that ₹10,000, I bought a cart and utensils. I kept improving, paid my children's school fees, and then I got ₹20,000. With that ₹20,000, I improved further, hired some workers and expanded,' she said.
PM Modi Highlights Her Story on Mann Ki Baat
Prime Minister Narendra Modi featured Ningamma's story in his Mann Ki Baat address on Sunday, lauding her entrepreneurial spirit and extending his best wishes to the family. Modi noted that she had upgraded her cart with assistance from the scheme and diversified her menu as customers and revenues grew.
'As customers and earnings increased, the family's financial situation improved. Today, she can provide a better education for her three children,' the Prime Minister said.
Ningamma said she was overwhelmed by the recognition. 'It's a great honour for me as well as the family that the Prime Minister acknowledged our endeavour. More than anyone else, my brother, my sister-in-law, my father and my mother are very happy,' she said.
Modi also observed that when a woman's business grows, the future of her entire family advances along with it.
About PM SVANidhi: A Micro-Credit Movement
The PM Street Vendor's AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (SVANidhi) scheme was launched in June 2020 as a first-of-its-kind micro-credit initiative for street vendors, backed by a government credit guarantee. What began as an emergency relief measure during the pandemic has since evolved into a broader movement promoting financial empowerment, digital inclusion, and social security for millions in India's informal economy.
Ningamma's story is emblematic of the scheme's wider reach — demonstrating how structured micro-credit access can lift entire households out of financial precarity.
What Comes Next
With her stall now well-established and her children receiving formal schooling, Ningamma represents a growing cohort of street vendors who have used SVANidhi loans as a ladder rather than a lifeline. As the scheme continues to expand, stories like hers are increasingly being cited by the government as evidence of ground-level impact in the informal sector.
