Opposition Raises Police Action Against Students

Senior Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLA Alok Mehta opened the debate the moment the House assembled, alleging that students who had taken to the streets the previous day were subjected to police action — including use of force, arrests, and reportedly firing. Mehta demanded a formal government statement explaining the circumstances behind the incidents.

His remarks triggered immediate objections from treasury bench members, sparking noisy exchanges across the floor. Undeterred, Mehta accused the ruling party of attempting to silence students, declaring that those contesting his statements were, in his words, 'anti-student.' He argued that the government's response should have been dialogue, not force.

Ruling Alliance Hits Back, Seeks Censure Motion

Ruling alliance MLA Raju Tiwari strongly contested the opposition's account, urging the Speaker to consider bringing a censure motion before the House over the alleged targeting of MLAs, journalists, and others during the protests. Tiwari argued that violence against elected representatives and media personnel could not be justified in any democratic framework.

Several ruling alliance legislators went further, questioning the very character of the agitation. They alleged that certain political groups had used students as a front to pursue political objectives, and that anti-social elements had infiltrated the demonstrations, precipitating violence and disruption. The ruling side demanded an impartial investigation to fix responsibility.

Proceedings Disrupted Amid Slogan-Shouting

Slogan-shouting and prolonged verbal confrontations from both sides disrupted the Assembly's proceedings for a considerable period before normal business could resume. Opposition legislators continued pressing the government for answers on the alleged police action, maintaining that timely engagement with students' grievances could have averted the confrontation entirely.
