Bihar teacher survives shooting as helmet stops bullet in Jamui
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A government school teacher in Jamui, Bihar, narrowly escaped death on Friday morning after a bullet fired at his head was deflected by his helmet, leaving him seriously injured near Bishanpur in the Lakshmipur police station area. The teacher, identified as Gautam Kumar Das, was ambushed by three masked assailants on a motorcycle while he was on his way to catch a train to his school.
How the Attack Unfolded
Gautam Kumar Das, a resident of Matiya village and a teacher at a government school in Kajra Panchayat, Lakhisarai district, had left home on his motorcycle heading towards Malaypur railway station when three masked men on a motorcycle began following him near Bishanpur. The attackers overtook his bike and forced him to stop, at which point one of the assailants pressed a gun against his head and fired.
In his own account of the ordeal, Das said, 'The criminals were following me. They overtook me and forced my bike to stop. As soon as the bike stopped, they fired at my head. Since I was wearing a helmet, the bullet struck the helmet, and it fell off. The second bullet hit my shoulder. Somehow, I gathered courage, picked up the helmet, wore it again, and ran towards the village to save my life.'
The second bullet struck him near his right shoulder, leaving him seriously injured. The assailants fled the scene immediately after the attack.
Police Response and Investigation
Sub-Inspector Manoj Kumar of the Barhat police station, whose patrol team was in the vicinity, rushed Das to a hospital for initial treatment at a private clinic in Jamui. Doctors subsequently referred him to Patna for advanced medical care.
Satish Suman, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Jamui, confirmed that teams from both the Barhat and Laxmipur police stations thoroughly combed the crime scene. 'Under the supervision of the SDPO, teams from the Barhat and Laxmipur police stations thoroughly investigated the crime scene and surrounding areas. CCTV footage from nearby locations is being examined by the technical team. An FSL team has also arrived at the site and is collecting evidence. The investigation is progressing actively,' Suman said.
Political Connections and Possible Motive
Das belongs to a politically prominent local family — his father, Mahesh Ravidas, is a former village Mukhiya, and his mother, Mohini Devi, currently holds the position of village Mukhiya. According to his mother, the family had received threats from an individual just a few days before the attack.
Police are investigating whether the shooting was motivated by political rivalry, personal enmity, or another factor. Raids are underway to identify and apprehend the three accused. Notably, the attack has triggered significant panic in the region, given the victim's family ties to local political circles.
What Happens Next
The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team is actively collecting evidence at the site, while CCTV footage from the area is under technical scrutiny. The motive behind the attack is expected to become clearer as the investigation advances. Authorities have not yet made any arrests.
