Did the DMK government commit ‘criminal negligence’ in the Tiruttani water contamination tragedy?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Dec 28 (NationPress) A tragic incident of water contamination in Karlambakkam village, located near Tiruttani, Tamil Nadu, has sparked intense political outrage. BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad has accused the DMK government of “criminal negligence” and a failure in governance.
The incident resulted in the deaths of two villagers and has left numerous others requiring hospitalization, once again highlighting the concerns surrounding drinking water safety and governance in Tamil Nadu.
The deceased, identified as Ezhumalai (65) and Sudha (50), members of Scheduled Caste families, reportedly ingested drinking water from the local panchayat that was tainted with sewage. More than ten others experienced severe vomiting and diarrhoea, necessitating their admission to nearby medical facilities.
In reaction, frustrated villagers organized road blockades, demanding accountability and swift action.
Prasad stated emphatically that this tragedy reveals the “hollowness of the Dravidian Model,” criticizing the DMK government for failing to provide even the most basic public service: safe drinking water.
“This is not merely an accident; it is a direct result of administrative negligence. When governance fails, it is the poor who suffer the most,” he declared.
He pointed out that the Centre’s Jal Jeevan Mission has heavily invested in Tamil Nadu, reporting that over 89 percent of rural households had tap connections as of November 2025.
“Despite receiving substantial central assistance, why are Scheduled Caste families still facing fatal consequences from drinking contaminated water?” he questioned, demanding responses from Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
Calling for urgent measures, the BJP leader insisted on the suspension of the Tiruvallur District Collector and urged for a high-level judicial inquiry into the matter.
He also called on the National Human Rights Commission and the National Commission for Scheduled Castes to take immediate cognizance of these deaths.
Prasad further criticized the DMK’s allies for their silence, despite their claims of being advocates for social justice.
“Their inaction amidst such suffering reveals the hypocrisy embedded in their politics,” he asserted.
As investigations progress, residents of Karlambakkam seek accountability and reassurance that access to safe drinking water—a fundamental human right—will be guaranteed.
