Has the Arrested BJP Leader's Family Taken a Stand Against Police Harassment?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Sep 8 (NationPress) The family of the detained BJP leader Rakesh Singh has approached the Calcutta High Court, seeking the dismissal of FIRs filed against them and an end to what they describe as 'police harassment'.
They have submitted a petition before the single bench of Justice Jay Sengupta, with the matter set to be heard on September 11.
Shuvam Singh, the BJP leader's younger son, stated: "The police have imposed another false case against my father. He has been accused of assault and cheating, but these allegations are completely unfounded. We are determined to prove their falsehood in court. Furthermore, my elder brother has also been wrongfully implicated, and another case has been filed against my mother, sister, and me. This is nothing more than relentless harassment. We are calling upon the high court to quash these FIRs against our family."
He expressed optimism that the court would dismiss these false cases as they lack merit.
On September 3, Kolkata Police apprehended the absconding BJP leader Rakesh Singh, charging him with vandalism at the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters in Kolkata from the previous month.
He was arrested from a flat located in the Tangra area, near EM Bypass.
Currently, he remains in police custody.
The BJP leader had been evading arrest since leading the vandalism at the state Congress headquarters on August 29.
Despite his legal troubles, Singh has remained active on social media, posting videos criticizing the police.
On September 1, the police detained Rakesh Singh's elder son Shivam Singh for allegedly assisting his father's escape, as he is the principal suspect in the vandalism.
Singh's arrest came following an FIR filed by the Congress party regarding the attack and defacement of posters featuring leaders such as Rahul Gandhi.
