Kolkata, September 1 (NationPress) - The son of West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party leader Rakesh Singh has been apprehended for allegedly facilitating his father's escape. Rakesh Singh is under scrutiny for his role in the vandalism at the state Congress headquarters, according to police officials on Monday.
Sources within the police indicate that Shivam Singh provided logistical assistance, even using his vehicle to help his father evade arrest prior to the police arrival.
Shivam is expected to be presented at a city court where authorities will request his custody.
In a related development, Rakesh Singh's daughter, Simran Singh, filed a complaint at the Jadavpur police station, claiming that “miscreants in police uniform” forcibly entered their home and abducted her brother.
However, police maintain that the arrest was conducted lawfully.
Following his son's arrest, Rakesh Singh took to social media to express his discontent with law enforcement.
“My son was arrested after being harassed because the police could not apprehend me. My wife and daughter faced harassment at my son's residence. I will take legal action against my son's arrest in the Calcutta High Court,” the fugitive leader stated.
On Friday, a faction of BJP supporters, led by Rakesh Singh, wreaked havoc at the Congress headquarters on CIT Road in central Kolkata, setting party flags ablaze and defacing posters of party leaders including Rahul Gandhi, as part of their protest against alleged insults directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Gandhi's 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' in Bihar.
The protesters initially rallied outside the party office 'Bidhan Bhawan', where they burned Congress flags and tires.
Subsequently, they breached the Congress office premises, tearing apart posters and banners while defacing images of senior Congress leaders.
In response to the incident, state Congress President Subhankar Sarkar called for the immediate detention of those involved in the vandalism.
Congress members, led by Sarkar, also staged a road blockade at Moulali Crossing to protest the vandalism.
On Saturday, the Kolkata Police arrested three individuals connected to Rakesh Singh regarding the vandalism. They were identified as Vijayprasad Dhanuk, Santoshkumar Rajbhar, and Dibyendu Samanta.
A police team also visited Rakesh Singh's residence on Saturday afternoon for an investigation, but he was not located.
Police stated that the arrests were made following an FIR filed by the Congress on Sunday concerning the attack and defacement of Rahul Gandhi's and other leaders' posters.
