BJP's Vijayendra slams Karnataka govt over appeasement, development gap
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra on Monday, 1 June launched a sharp attack on the state government in Bidar, alleging that its minority appeasement politics has harmed the state and that Hindus have faced humiliation since the ruling party came to power. The Opposition also accused the government of failing to deliver meaningful development over the past three years.
Key Allegations Against the Government
Speaking to reporters in Bidar, Vijayendra alleged that the government has been consumed by 'corruption and minority appeasement', leaving no room for substantive governance. He claimed that not a single significant development project had been undertaken in three years, and that the administration's guarantee schemes had strained state finances so severely that even development works were now out of reach.
'The government has focussed only on corruption and minority appeasement. Nothing else has happened in the last three years. Their guarantee schemes have tied their hands financially,' Vijayendra said, adding that fund shortages would constrain any future chief minister's ability to execute development plans.
Aland Rioting Case Withdrawal
Vijayendra also raised the withdrawal of cases related to the Aland rioting incident, which followed the alleged desecration of a Shivling. He said the BJP has been actively organising protests against the move and mounting pressure on the government to reverse the decision. He described the withdrawal as emblematic of what he called the ruling party's selective approach to law and order.
Shivakumar Leadership Under Scrutiny
Commenting on Karnataka Congress President and Chief Minister designate D.K. Shivakumar, Vijayendra said the public did not need further explanation about how governance under Shivakumar would unfold. He urged Shivakumar to first take oath as Chief Minister, adding that 'the BJP will do everything necessary to politically counter him.'
On the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, Vijayendra said the party's central leadership would take a call after assessing the political situation in the state.
School Infrastructure in Focus
Vijayendra also targeted the government over the state of public education, alleging that school buildings had collapsing roofs and that free textbooks and uniforms were not being supplied on time. He questioned how students could realise their potential in institutions lacking basic facilities.
He alleged the administration had given greater priority to internal power struggles over government school development, and called on Shivakumar to stop making what he described as 'empty speeches' and instead treat educational infrastructure as an urgent priority. He argued that had the government focused on public education, the Education Department would not be in its current difficulties.
What Comes Next
With D.K. Shivakumar yet to be sworn in as Chief Minister, the BJP's posture signals an aggressive Opposition strategy from day one. The party's stance on the Rajya Sabha elections and its continued protests over the Aland case withdrawal will be key indicators of how it plans to pressure the new government in the weeks ahead.
