Kolkata, Nov 3 (NationPress) A single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court, on Monday, granted permission to the West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to hold a rally in Panihati, located in the North 24 Parganas district, on Tuesday. This coincides with a significant rally organized by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Kolkata, aimed at protesting the special intensive revision (SIR).
Both political factions will rally on the same day as the initial phase of the three-stage SIR begins in West Bengal. The TMC's rally in Kolkata will address concerns over the BJP's alleged attempts to instill fear regarding SIR, while the BJP's gathering in Panihati will counter TMC's claims, asserting that they are spreading false narratives by linking SIR to the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Notably, a tragic event occurred last week when Pradeep Kar, a 57-year-old Panihati resident, took his own life, reportedly due to fears surrounding NRC's implementation in the state.
Previously, the TMC conducted a rally in Panihati addressing these concerns. In response, the BJP planned a counter-rally for Tuesday, but police initially denied permission for the event, which is set to be led by Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly.
The BJP then approached the Calcutta High Court's Justice Kausik Chanda for legal recourse. After a thorough hearing, Justice Chanda approved the rally with specific stipulations. The event will be capped at a maximum of 1,000 participants, and organizers must ensure that local residents are not inconvenienced.
Justice Chanda also instructed the police to provide adequate security and maintain order during the rally.
