Mumbai, July 10 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, stated on Thursday that the decision to rename the Carnac Bridge to Sindoor Bridge could eliminate the remembrance of its dark history, as Carnac was a British governor known for his deceit and cruelty towards Indians.
He inaugurated a crucial link that connects the port area along P.D'Mello Road in southern Mumbai with the commercial sectors of Crawford Market, Kalbadevi, and Dhobi Talao, spanning from east to west via the railway.
The bridge had been known as Carnac Bridge for the past 150 years.
In his address, Chief Minister Fadnavis remarked that the name change followed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's assertion that the dark chapters of history should come to an end and their remnants be removed.
He noted, "Following the Pahalgam attack, the Indian Army entered Pakistan and dismantled terrorist camps through Operation Sindoor. This demonstrated India's capability to retaliate. I am pleased that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has named the bridge after Operation Sindoor, which is widely regarded as an extraordinary achievement of our Armed Forces," he further added.
The bridge measures a total length of 342 meters, with 70 meters situated within the railway boundary, making it highly beneficial for traffic flow in Mumbai, he commented.
CM Fadnavis extended his congratulations to the entire Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation team for their commendable effort in constructing the historic Carnac Bridge in a short period, overcoming various congestion challenges and effectively bridging over the railway.
The Sindoor Bridge is now dedicated to the people of Mumbai and became operational for traffic starting at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
He stated, "The Sindoor Bridge plays a vital role in facilitating traffic between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Masjid Bunder, and Mohammad Ali Marg in South Mumbai. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has reconstructed this bridge to preserve the existing route linking the eastern and western parts of Masjid Bunder. The construction of the Sindoor Bridge was carried out according to the plan approved by Central Railway Administration," said the Chief Minister.
The bridge's reconstruction aims to provide efficient east-west traffic facilities that have been hindered for nearly a decade.
This structure will significantly alleviate traffic congestion on P.D'Mello Road, particularly at the junction of Walchand Hirachand Road and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Road.
Additionally, the bridge's reconstruction is anticipated to ease traffic on Yusuf Mehar Ali Road, Mohammad Ali Road, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Road, and Kazi Syed Road, as noted in the government statement.
