Kolkata, May 25 (NationPress) The CBI apprehended Dr Tapan Kumar Jana, the head of the anatomy department at West Bengal's Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, on charges related to a human organ trafficking scheme.
Dr Jana's arrest transpired in Kolkata following an extensive overnight raid that initiated at his residence in Burdwan town, located in the East Burdwan district of West Bengal, commencing Saturday night and extending into Sunday morning.
During the execution of the raid, Jana was reportedly absent from his home. His spouse, Sushmita Jana, who also practices as a doctor at a medical facility in Kolkata, informed CBI agents that her husband was fulfilling his duties at the Murshidabad hospital.
The detained physician is set to appear before a special court in Kolkata on Sunday, where the CBI is anticipated to request his custody. In addition to his role at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, he serves as an assessor with the National Medical Council (NMC).
In addition to his alleged participation in the organ smuggling operation, there are accusations of him generating falsified assessment reports from the NMC in exchange for money.
A recent complaint from a medical college and hospital in Karnataka accuses Jana of soliciting Rs 10 lakh for facilitating an NMC assessment report for the institution.
The investigative team suspects Jana is linked to a broader operation and is eager to interrogate him post-arrest.
During the thorough raid, CBI officials confiscated cash, gold, diamond jewelry, a computer hard drive, and various documents.
The operation was executed in strict accordance with protocol, with CBI agents first notifying the local police station prior to commencing the raids around midnight.
The raid involved a dedicated team of eight CBI officials.
