Uproar in Jharkhand Assembly: Opposition Demands Action on Corruption and Lawlessness
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ranchi, March 10 (NationPress) The Jharkhand Assembly saw significant turmoil on Tuesday as opposition legislators protested vehemently regarding the state’s law and order conditions and accusations of corruption.
As the session commenced, BJP MLAs surged into the well of the House, brandishing posters and chanting slogans, insisting on a debate over what they characterized as escalating corruption and a declining law and order situation in the state.
The atmosphere intensified when AJSU Party MLA Nirmal Mahto was ordered to leave the House by the Speaker. However, he was subsequently allowed to return after a consensus was reached among the members.
Babulal Marandi, the Leader of the Opposition, launched a scathing critique of the government, claiming that corruption was widespread and that no official work was being carried out without financial transactions.
He raised alarms over the law and order scenario, referencing incidents such as the shooting of labor union leaders in Dumka, a police assault on a devotee at the Rajrappa temple, and inappropriate conduct by a Deputy Commissioner towards women protesters during a Women’s Day event in Giridih.
Marandi stated that the government could no longer be termed an “Abua Sarkar” (people's government) but had devolved into a “Babua Sarkar” (government dominated by officials).
He asserted that criminals now acted with impunity while officials operated without accountability. He called for an in-depth discussion on these pressing issues before addressing any other business of the House.
In response, Finance Minister Radha Krishna Kishore asserted that the law and order situation in the state was firmly under control and emphasized the government's zero-tolerance policy towards corruption.
He challenged the opposition to provide specific examples of corruption, promising that the government would act if any allegations were substantiated.
The minister also highlighted that Assembly procedures are governed by rules and only matters sanctioned by the Business Advisory Committee may be discussed.
The session descended into chaos when a direct confrontation arose between Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu and MLA Nirmal Mahto during the debate.
In light of the escalating conflict, the Speaker expressed strong discontent and ordered Mahto to be removed from the House. He was later reinstated after interventions from the Finance Minister and requests from opposition members.
During the heated exchanges, members from both the ruling and opposition parties stood facing each other for an extended period, halting the normal proceedings.
