A team of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police arrived at a Trinamool Congress (TMC) party office adjacent to former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence in Kalighat, Kolkata on Tuesday, 9 June to conduct raid and search operations. The move came on the same day Abhishek Banerjee, TMC's General Secretary and Mamata's nephew, was summoned for questioning at the CID's Bhabani Bhavan headquarters in South Kolkata.

Confrontation at the Office Entrance

The CID team was stopped at the entrance by former Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Subhasish Chakraborty, who engaged investigators in a prolonged argument. Chakraborty told officials that since neither Mamata Banerjee nor Abhishek Banerjee was present in Kolkata, he could not permit entry into the premises.

CID officers pushed back, making clear that their authority to conduct the operation did not depend on the approval of party representatives. 'Are you obstructing us from performing our duties?' one CID officer asked Chakraborty directly.

Chakraborty denied obstruction, clarifying his position: 'I am not obstructing you. Since I am voluntarily in charge of this office, I just informed you about my position and explained why I am unable to allow you.'

Standoff Continues; CAPF Personnel Deployed

At the time of filing, CID officials remained at the spot awaiting instructions from their senior authorities. Personnel from the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) also arrived at the location, adding to the visible security presence outside the TMC office.

The Underlying Case: Signature Mismatch in Assembly Resolutions

The raid is linked to an ongoing investigation into an alleged mismatch of signatures of certain TMC legislators in a key resolution concerning important posts in the West Bengal Assembly — positions constitutionally reserved for the Opposition bench. Abhishek Banerjee had been served a third consecutive notice by the CID, directing him to appear at Bhabani Bhavan by 5 pm on Tuesday for questioning in this matter.

Both Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee were reportedly in New Delhi at the time, having attended the crucial meeting of the Opposition India National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc on Monday.
