Mumbai, Dec 24 (NationPress) The Maharashtra Congress has officially proclaimed an alliance with the Rashtriya Samaj Paksha (RSP), a party led by Dhangar community figure Mahadev Jankar, ahead of the forthcoming Municipal Corporation and Zilla Parishad elections.
This declaration was made by Harshwardhan Sapkal, the President of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), following a discussion with Jankar.
Sapkal emphasized, "Mahadev Jankar represents a vital voice for the Bahujan community. At a moment when the Bharatiya Janata Party is jeopardizing democracy and the Constitution, it is crucial for similar-minded parties to unite. Although a formal alliance wasn't established during the Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections, we collaborated successfully in regions like Satara, Sangli, Marathwada, and Vidarbha. We are now solidifying this partnership for the upcoming elections."
Previously, Jankar was affiliated with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis from 2014 to 2019.
A notable leader of the Dhangar community, he was close to the late BJP figure Gopinath Munde.
In 2014, Jankar contested unsuccessfully against the undivided NCP's Supriya Sule from Baramati in the Lok Sabha elections.
In 2024, the NDA nominated him for the Parbhani seat, which he lost to Shiv Sena - UBT. After feeling sidelined by the alliance as BJP's Dhangar leaders emerged, Jankar opted to sever ties with the NDA.
The incorporation of Jankar as a leader from the Dhangar community could serve as a significant advantage for Congress in the upcoming Zilla Parishad elections in regions such as Solapur, Satara, Sangli, Parbhani, and parts of Pune.
Jankar stressed the shared ideology between the two parties, stating, "To champion the principles of Shahu, Phule, and Ambedkar, it is imperative for aligned forces to unite. With this in mind, I met with Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, in Delhi. The alliance between RSP and Congress was effectively concluded on May 31."
Jankar noted that Rahul Gandhi has become a vocal advocate for the youth, women, tribals, and marginalized populations.
