Did Congress MPs Exploit MPLADS Funds for Political Benefit?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, Jan 5 (NationPress) Rajasthan's Minister of State for Home Affairs Jawahar Singh Bedham accused three Congress MPs of improperly utilizing funds from the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) for their own political advantage, asserting that essential development needs in their respective constituencies were intentionally overlooked.
Bedham identified the Congress MPs as Sanjana Jatav (Bharatpur), Rahul Kaswan (Churu), and Brijendra Singh Ola (Jhunjhunu), contending that they breached the fundamental principles of MPLADS by rerouting funds intended for Rajasthan to the Kaithal Assembly constituency in Haryana.
Kaithal is represented by Aditya Singh Surjewala, son of Congress Rajya Sabha MP and general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala.
According to Bedham, these funds were purportedly redirected to please the Congress central leadership and secure the political futures of the three MPs, jeopardizing development in their own parliamentary areas.
Elaborating on the MPLADS guidelines, Bedham stated that each MP is allocated Rs 5 crore annually, with a maximum of Rs 25 lakh allowed for projects outside their constituency, except in disaster situations where larger sums may be permitted. Nonetheless, he alleged that the trio of Congress MPs collectively allocated approximately Rs 1.20 crore to Kaithal district.
Bedham detailed that this included Rs 45 lakh from Sanjana Jatav, Rs 50 lakh from Rahul Kaswan, and Rs 25 lakh from Brijendra Singh Ola. He expressed astonishment that, despite being elected by the people of Rajasthan, these MPs opted to divert development funds to another state while several vital projects in Bharatpur, Churu, and Jhunjhunu remain unfinished.
Providing a breakdown by constituency, Bedham noted that Bharatpur MP Sanjana Jatav proposed 142 MPLADS projects, of which only 37 have been completed, all located in Alwar district. He asserted that not a single project has been finished in Bharatpur district, while Rs 45 lakh worth of projects were carried out in the Kaithal Assembly constituency of Haryana.
He emphasized that these figures demonstrate a blatant disregard for public accountability and the developmental needs of the MPs' own regions, calling for transparency and strict compliance with MPLADS regulations.
