New Delhi, May 26 (NationPress) In a recent statement, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed that the issues associated with rainwater accumulation in the city have significantly decreased compared to previous years. She acknowledged that waterlogging had been a concern in certain areas, primarily due to three instances of unprecedented rainfall.
Speaking to the press, CM Gupta highlighted that the Delhi government and associated agencies have successfully removed a staggering 30 lakh metric tonnes of silt to enhance the drainage system ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.
She remarked, “The desilting operations carried out in Delhi this year have been nothing short of historic.” She indicated that officials have been designated for various problematic spots and will be held accountable for any oversights.
“Waterlogging has plagued Delhi for many years, yet this time, although the city faced record rainfall thrice, we managed to keep the situation under control. The water was efficiently drained from the drains within an hour,” she stated, praising all departments for their diligent efforts.
According to her, the extent of waterlogging in the city is considerably lower this year due to consistent monitoring, and she pledged to further enhance the systems in place for managing rainwater flow.
“Whenever there is a sudden downpour, several cubic meters of water may accumulate on the roads. Naturally, it will take approximately an hour for the water to recede. However, we have not received any complaints about prolonged waterlogging causing issues, and we are committed to ensuring this remains the case,” she emphasized.
CM Gupta's remarks come in response to the criticisms from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) following Sunday’s overnight thunderstorm and the resulting waterlogging complaints from various regions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Delhi experienced wind speeds reaching up to 82 km/h and recorded 81.2 mm of rainfall in a mere six-hour span from 11:30 p.m. Saturday to 5:30 a.m. Sunday.
In the midst of political tensions, Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena praised the efforts of CM Gupta's administration to desilt drains and improve the city's drainage infrastructure to accommodate rainwater during the impending monsoon.
