New Delhi, Aug 12 (NationPress) Cyber fraudsters have caused a significant financial loss of Rs 70.64 crore to the residents of Delhi through 184 incidents of cybercrime in the first half of 2025, as reported by official data on Tuesday.
In 2024, the citizens of Delhi suffered a staggering loss of Rs 817 crore across 1,591 cybercrime incidents, according to a written reply from the Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, to Lok Sabha.
The Minister also highlighted that in 2023, there were 1,347 recorded cases of cyber financial fraud, with victims losing a total of Rs 183 crore.
In 2022, the losses amounted to Rs 231 crore due to 1,545 cyber fraud cases, while in 2021, the losses were Rs 91 crore from 1,630 cyber fraud incidents, Rai stated.
According to national-level cybercrime data for 2022, compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau, Telangana reported the highest financial crime rate in the country at 40.3 percent. The overall all-India cyber crime rate, based on NCRB data, stands at 4.8.
Karnataka follows Telangana with a cybercrime rate of 18.6, recording 647 incidents for its population of 12,556 lakh.
Among the Union Territories, Puducherry and Delhi have the highest crime rates at 3.9 and 3.2 respectively.
The calculation of the cyber crime rate involves dividing the population of a state or UT (in lakhs) by the number of reported cases of fraud.
The Minister mentioned that the Delhi Police has initiated several measures to combat cyber crime, including the establishment of IFSO (Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations), which is equipped with modern technology for investigating complex cyber crime cases.
Additionally, a Cyber Police Station has been operational in each of the 15 Districts of Delhi since 2022 to address cybercrime-related incidents, he noted.
Help desks at police stations are available to assist women impacted by cyber crimes.
Furthermore, a dedicated unit, SPUWAC (Special Police Unit for Women and Children), is functioning within the Delhi Police to address these cases with care and promptness, stated Rai.
