Delhi L-G Calls for Unity in Combating Drug Epidemic in Video Address

New Delhi, Dec 6 (NationPress) In a distinctive video message aimed at the residents of Delhi, Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena emphasized the urgent need for citizens to unite in the battle against the drug epidemic during a month-long initiative that commenced on December 1.

“The threat of drug abuse poses a significant risk to India's demographic dividend — our youth,” stated the L-G, who shared the video on his social media platform X, accompanied by the slogan: “Let's unite and work towards a #DrugFreeDelhi!”

“Drug addiction is not just a personal issue; it endangers our society, homes, and families. Millions, particularly the youth, are on a path of self-destruction due to drug dependency,” remarked the L-G, who is accountable to the Union Home Ministry and oversees the Delhi Police and the city's law enforcement.

Describing the drug trade as a global conspiracy against India, he asserted that this illicit trade is intended to undermine the nation’s standing on the world stage.

“All of us must combat this menace, and we can only achieve this by personally rejecting drugs,” he noted.

Encouraging citizens to participate in the month-long campaign for a drug-free Delhi, L-G Saxena urged residents to assist their friends struggling with addiction to overcome this challenge.

“Our struggle is not against the individuals addicted to drugs, but against the drugs themselves,” stated Saxena in the video, which featured the Delhi Police logo.

Previously, the L-G instructed the police, the Narcotics Control Bureau, and other departments of the Delhi government to collaboratively strive toward making the Capital drug-free within three years.

As part of the month-long initiative launched on December 1, the police have established specialized teams to target drug traffickers.

According to a Comprehensive National Survey on the Extent and Pattern of Substance Use in India conducted in 2018, after alcohol, cannabis is the most commonly used substance, with 3.1 crore users.

Recently, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with five significant spiritual organizations under “Mission Spandan” to combat drug addiction and the abuse of psychotropic substances through spiritual intervention.

The MoU was signed on behalf of the NCB by Anand Prakash Tiwari, DDG (Special Wing, Legal and Awareness), along with representatives from spiritual organizations including Art of Living, Prajapita Brahma Kumari, Iskcon, Sant Nirankari Charitable Foundation, and Shri Ram Chandra Mission.
