Eastern Railway opens 24x7 Emergency Medical Room at Barddhaman station
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Eastern Railway (ER) has launched a 24x7 Emergency Medical Room (EMR) at Barddhaman railway station in West Bengal, marking a significant upgrade in passenger healthcare infrastructure along one of India's busiest rail corridors. The facility, operated in partnership with KIMS Hospital, is designed to provide immediate medical assistance to passengers at the station and those aboard passing trains.
What the Facility Offers
Strategically located near the main entrance of Barddhaman station, the EMR will remain operational seven days a week, round the clock. It offers both basic and advanced medical care, supported by a dedicated ambulance, an on-site pharmacy, and laboratory facilities. The placement near the entrance is deliberate — ensuring that passengers who feel unwell before purchasing tickets or after exiting the ticketed area can also access emergency care without barriers.
Why Barddhaman Was Chosen
Barddhaman is a critical junction on the Howrah–New Delhi main line, with trains passing throughout the day and night. It also serves as a major hub for short-distance express and suburban services, meaning passenger footfall — and the associated risk of medical emergencies — is consistently high. Railway officials noted that passengers are occasionally required to deboard long-distance trains mid-journey due to sudden medical episodes, making on-platform emergency care essential.
The First Response Advantage
Officials underscored the life-saving potential of the EMR's rapid-response setup. 'Those first few moments are very crucial in handling serious cases. Once the condition stabilises, a decision can be taken on whether they should be moved to hospital or allowed to continue their journeys,' one official explained. The integrated system is expected to reduce the time between a medical emergency being reported and the patient receiving professional care.
Part of a Wider Eastern Railway Rollout
The Barddhaman EMR is not a standalone initiative. A similar facility is already operational at Bolpur station, and another is expected to open at Rampurhat station after Durga Puja. Both Bolpur and Rampurhat are important stops along the route connecting Howrah with north Bengal and the northeastern states. According to officials, Eastern Railway is continuing to strengthen medical infrastructure at key stations as part of a broader passenger safety drive. The Rampurhat opening will extend the EMR network further into a region where access to emergency healthcare can otherwise be limited.
