Vijayawada, April 23 (NationPress) A local court has placed the senior IPS officer and former Andhra Pradesh intelligence chief P. Sitarama Anjaneyulu in judicial custody until May 7 amid allegations of wrongful detention and harassment involving a Mumbai-based actress.
The CID arrested the suspended IPS officer in Hyderabad on Tuesday and subsequently presented him to the third Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate in Vijayawada.
The court ordered his remand to judicial custody for a duration of 14 days, following which he was transferred to the Vijayawada district prison.
A medical examination of Anjaneyulu was conducted at the Vijayawada Government Hospital before his court appearance.
Anjaneyulu, who held the position of Director General of Police, Intelligence during Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy's administration, is the second individual implicated in this case.
He faces serious accusations of misusing his official authority to facilitate the unlawful arrest of Kadambari Jethwani and her parents, allegedly under the instruction of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader Kukkala Vidyasagar.
He is one of three senior IPS officers who have been suspended due to their purported involvement in the wrongful detention and harassment of Jethwani.
On September 15, 2024, the state government suspended Anjaneyulu Kanthi Rana Tata, the then Commissioner of Police in Vijayawada, along with Vishal Gunni, who served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police.
These officers allegedly acted under political influence and arrested the actress and her parents, disregarding established procedures and protocols.
This incident followed a complaint lodged by Jethwani against Vidyasagar and the police officials involved.
The actress was detained based on a forgery and extortion complaint that Vidyasagar filed in February 2024 during the YSR Congress Party's governance.
The case was recorded at the Ibrahimpatnam police station in the NTR district for allegedly forging property documents, extorting money from Vidyasagar, and deceiving him.
The actress and her parents were apprehended in Mumbai by a unit of Andhra Police, led by the then Vijayawada Deputy Commissioner of Police, Vishal Guni.
After the TDP-led coalition assumed power, the actress filed a formal complaint with NTR Police Commissioner S.V. Rajasekhar Babu, alleging that senior police officials conspired with Vidyasagar to target her and her family.
Jethwani claimed that a fabricated case was lodged against her using forged documents, causing her both mental and physical distress. Vidyasagar, who is also reputed to be a film producer, has been named as the primary accused in the case, which is registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
According to her complaint, the actress and her elderly parents were forcibly taken from Mumbai to Vijayawada without prior notice or due legal process. The family allegedly faced humiliation and was compelled to endure over 40 days in judicial custody.
