Chatra (Jharkhand), March 25 (NationPress) The Jharkhand Police have detained five individuals in relation to the lynching of a youth named Ankit Gupta in Chatra city, an event that has sparked significant public outrage in the region.
The assault took place on the night of March 20, when Ankit was reportedly attacked by a group of men. Following the incident, local businesses in Chatra's district headquarters remained closed for several hours on March 21 as residents protested the murder and sought justice for the deceased.
During a press briefing on Tuesday, Chatra ASP Ritwik Srivastava confirmed the apprehension of the five suspects. Among those arrested are three brothers: Sushant Kumar, Sumit Kumar, and Saurabh Kumar, all from Nayaki Talab, along with Milesh Kumar and Vishnu Kumar from Dadha village.
The police have also seized the stick and knife used in the attack.
As per the investigation, the motive behind this homicide was rooted in personal rivalry stemming from an earlier confrontation.
ASP Srivastava indicated that the violence was retaliatory in nature. 'Earlier this year, during Saraswati Puja, Ankit and his friends allegedly attacked Sushant Kumar in Deepa Mohalla. In a bid for vengeance, Sushant, alongside his brothers and accomplices, conspired to assault Ankit,' he stated.
On the evening of March 20, around 8 p.m., the assailants confronted Ankit while he was riding his scooter near the Pathaldas temple on the main road in Chatra city. The group reportedly beat him with sticks and assaulted him with a knife, inflicting severe injuries.
Ankit was promptly taken to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries on the morning of March 21.
In response to this incident, SP Vikas Kumar Pandey established a SIT to accelerate the investigation. This team, led by ASP Srivastava, includes Chatra SDPO Sandeep Suman, trainee DSP Wasim Raza, and Sadar police station in-charge Vipin Kumar, among others.
'The investigation is progressing rapidly, and operations are ongoing to apprehend additional suspects involved in the crime,' stated ASP Srivastava.
