Rahul Gandhi Raises Alarm Over Risks to Farmers, Energy, and Data Security in India
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, March 7 (NationPress) Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday of yielding to pressure from former US President Donald Trump. He claimed that recent agreements made with the United States have undermined India's farmers, energy autonomy, and data sovereignty.
Addressing the concluding event of a statewide yatra led by Kerala's Opposition Leader V. D. Satheesan, Gandhi asserted that Modi had effectively opened significant segments of the Indian economy to American enterprises.
He noted that the repercussions of these decisions would be profoundly detrimental to India's agricultural sector.
“No Prime Minister prior to Modi has opened India's agriculture to the United States. Large, mechanized American corporations will now pose competition to our farmers, local traders, and small businesses. This will have catastrophic effects on the agrarian economy,” he contended.
Furthermore, Gandhi criticized the commitments made in the energy sector, alleging that India had bound its oil procurement to US consent.
“Just think about it: a nation as robust as India must seek approval before purchasing oil from Russia. That is the agreement Modi has reached,” he remarked.
The Congress leader also expressed worries regarding data sovereignty, characterizing the information generated by India's 1.4 billion citizens as one of the nation's most precious resources in the age of artificial intelligence.
“Every fragment of medical, travel, and consumer data produced by our populace is a national asset. Yet, the Prime Minister has permitted American firms to access this vast pool of data,” he stated.
Gandhi further alleged that India has also agreed to import goods worth billions from the US as part of this agreement.
“No Indian Prime Minister would have signed such a deal without facing immense pressure,” he claimed.
The Congress leader asserted that Modi has placed India in a state of economic dependency.
“You can find videos where Donald Trump openly threatens Narendra Modi, stating that he can ruin his career. The reality is that Modi has given in to Trump,” he alleged.
Gandhi referred to Kerala as a “global concept,” highlighting the millions of Malayalis residing overseas, particularly in the Gulf region, whose remittances bolster the state's economy.
He also pointed out Indian cricketer Sanju Samson from Thiruvananthapuram as an example of Kerala's global influence.
In conclusion, he warned that the world is entering a precarious phase amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, urging India to proceed with caution to safeguard its citizens and national interests.
