Government Starts Initiative for Dr Manmohan Singh's Memorial

New Delhi, Jan 1 (NationPress) The central government has initiated efforts to create a memorial in memory of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. A number of potential locations have been identified for the memorial, and Dr Singh’s family has been presented with these choices for their consideration.

The ultimate decision regarding the location will set the stage for the construction process, but there are several essential formalities that must be completed before the work can commence, according to sources from IANS.

One of the fundamental requirements for the memorial is the establishment of a trust. According to existing regulations, land for such memorials can only be allocated to a trust and not to individuals or other organizations. This trust will be crucial in the application process for land allocation. After the trust is constituted, it will formally apply for land for the memorial, and once allocated, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be executed with the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) to initiate construction.

Sources suggest that the government is contemplating the allocation of one to one and a half acres of land for Dr Singh's memorial.

Potential sites for the memorial include areas around Rajghat, Rashtriya Smriti Sthal, and Kisan Ghat, all of which hold significant importance in the nation’s political narrative. Officials from the Ministry of Urban Development have already inspected the vicinity of Rajghat to assess the viability of these locations.

Additionally, there is a possibility of choosing a site near the mausoleum of the Nehru-Gandhi family leaders, such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and Sanjay Gandhi. This would place Dr Manmohan Singh’s memorial in close proximity to the burial sites of other notable political figures, enhancing the historical relevance of the location.

While discussions are still in progress, the establishment of the trust and the final selection of the memorial's site will soon pave the way for the construction of a tribute that honors Dr Manmohan Singh’s legacy as a statesman and leader of India.

Earlier, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced that the government had resolved to allocate land for a memorial dedicated to Manmohan Singh and this decision had been conveyed to his family and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. Dr Manmohan Singh, one of India's longest-serving Prime Ministers, renowned as the architect of significant liberalizing economic reforms, passed away on December 26.
