Government Unveils AI Data and Compute Platforms; GPU Development in 3-5 Years

Synopsis

The Central government has launched AIKosha, India's sovereign datasets platform, and an AI Compute Portal to enhance access to quality datasets for AI technologies. They aim to develop domestic GPUs within 3-5 years as part of the IndiaAI Mission.

Key Takeaways

  • AIKosha launched for quality datasets.
  • Target of developing GPUs in 3-5 years.
  • 14,000 GPUs operational, 4,000 more coming.
  • AI training courses for civil servants introduced.
  • India aims to be among the top 5 AI nations.

New Delhi, March 6 (NationPress) In an effort to enhance the availability of quality datasets for the advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, the Central government on Thursday made a significant stride in its IndiaAI Mission by introducing AIKosha, the nation’s sovereign datasets platform, along with an AI Compute Portal.

As part of these initiatives, the government has set a goal to develop GPUs domestically within the next three to five years. This forms a segment of the broader Rs 10,000-crore IndiaAI Mission.

AIKosha is crafted to furnish high-quality datasets essential for training AI models. The AI Compute Portal will enable companies to access subsidized GPUs for their research and development needs.

Currently, around 14,000 GPUs are operational, with an additional 4,000 on the way.

Previously, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) had disclosed the acquisition of 18,693 GPUs from selected vendors.

The primary datasets for AIKosha are being supplied by various government ministries, with private entities also being consulted to contribute non-personal datasets.

Union Minister for Railways, Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, stated that ministries associated with agriculture, weather forecasting, and Bhashini have already contributed data to the platform.

“India's own AI foundational model is advancing well; we currently have 67 applications, of which 22 are aimed at developing LLMs,” Vaishnaw remarked.

He further noted that a significant portion of our compute capacity will be dedicated to creating sovereign AI models.

“These models will be developed at a considerably lower cost compared to those in advanced economies,” Vaishnaw added.

“India aims to be among the top 5 AI nations during PM Modi’s third term. We will have our own chipsets in the next 3-4 years,” the Union Minister indicated.

He also mentioned that the government plans to continuously enhance AI compute capacity every quarter.

As a component of the IndiaAI Mission, AI training courses for civil servants have been initiated under the capacity building mission (CBM).

These courses are designed to equip government officials with the necessary knowledge to comprehend and apply AI-based solutions.
