Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel to visit flood-hit Surat, Valsad on July 10
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel will travel to rain-ravaged Surat and Valsad districts on Thursday, 10 July to conduct a first-hand assessment of the flood situation, inspect ongoing relief and rescue operations, and meet affected residents. The visit was announced on Wednesday by government spokesperson and minister Jitu Vaghani following a Cabinet review in Gandhinagar.
Cabinet Reviews Monsoon Situation
The state Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Patel, held a comprehensive review of the rainfall situation across Gujarat on Wednesday. Briefing reporters after the meeting, Vaghani said: 'The Chief Minister would undertake the visit to obtain a first-hand assessment of the current rainfall situation, understand the condition of the affected people, and personally inspect the ongoing relief and rescue operations.'
Patel has also directed local ministers and ministers-in-charge of all rain-affected districts to undertake field visits and assess the ground situation themselves. They have been specifically instructed to evaluate the preparedness of the administrative machinery and disaster management arrangements in their respective districts.
IMD Alerts and Flood Risk
The review comes as Gujarat continues to reel under an active monsoon spell. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of the state, with alerts flagging the risk of localised flash flooding in vulnerable areas. Authorities have urged residents in low-lying regions to remain cautious and adhere to official advisories, as the wet spell is expected to persist.
11 Deaths Recorded in Recent Rainfall Spell
The Cabinet paid tribute to 11 people who lost their lives during the recent heavy rainfall, in incidents involving wall collapses, tree falls, and lightning strikes. The Council of Ministers expressed condolences and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved families.
This is not the first time the state's southern districts have borne the brunt of monsoon fury — Surat and Valsad have historically been among Gujarat's most flood-prone zones, with the Tapi and Auranga river systems prone to swelling rapidly during intense rainfall spells.
EV Charging Policy Also on Cabinet Agenda
Separately, the Cabinet discussed measures to promote cleaner transport. Patel had earlier directed officials to prepare a comprehensive EV Charging Station Policy for Gujarat to strengthen environment-friendly transportation. The proposed policy is intended to facilitate wider adoption of green energy and electric vehicles across the state, though no timeline for its rollout was announced.
With the monsoon season far from over, all eyes will be on Thursday's ground visit by the Chief Minister to determine the scale of relief required and the pace of recovery in the two worst-affected districts.
