Chandigarh, Feb 7 (NationPress) Haryana Minister Anil Vij stated that, similar to the US, India needs to consider deporting millions of illegal immigrants residing in the country.
He emphasized that every nation has the authority to expel illegal migrants, asserting that US President Donald Trump acted correctly in his approach.
This statement followed the deportation of 104 Indian nationals from various states, who arrived on a US military flight at Amritsar airport on Wednesday.
Minister Vij remarked, “These individuals are from other nations, yet we provide for them. Why should we? They ought to return to their countries of origin. We need to develop a policy to facilitate their return,” he added.
In a related matter, a senior police official indicated that an investigation is underway against travel agents, as the deportees claimed they were promised a green card, citizenship, and regularization upon reaching the United States.
However, they were ultimately sent back, and action against the agents will be taken based on the complaints received.
All cases will be overseen by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Ambala Range IGP Sibash Kabiraj, which was established in 2023 by the previous Home Minister Vij to address the increasing occurrences of “kabootarbazi”.
This incident marks the first batch of Indians deported under the Trump administration's crackdown initiated when it took office last month.
Vij responded to Punjab's NRI Affairs Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal's request for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss deportation with President Trump, stating, “If someone enters another nation illegally, that country has the right to expel them. Trump made no error in this regard.”
He added, “We should learn from this. Millions of individuals are illegal in our country... They were born elsewhere, yet we support them. They need to be sent back.”
Among the 104 deportees who arrived in Amritsar, 33 each were from Haryana and Gujarat, 30 from Punjab, three each from Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, and two from Chandigarh.
Punjab Minister Dhaliwal had called for Prime Minister Modi to engage with his “friend” President Trump about the deportation of Indians.
In another development, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann criticized the handcuffing and chaining of deported Indians. He condemned the Haryana government for transporting them in police vans from Amritsar.
Mann expressed his outrage on X, highlighting the inhumane treatment of deportees upon their return to India. He remarked that, rather than addressing the emotional and economic distress of the deportees, the BJP-led Haryana government’s use of police prisoner vans only exacerbates their suffering.
