Kolkata, Jan 29 (NationPress) A single-judge panel of the Calcutta High Court, on Wednesday, requested a detailed report from the state-operated R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata concerning allegations of a “threat culture” existing at this prestigious medical institution.

The panel, led by Justice Jay Sengupta, has mandated the hospital management to submit this report by February 5. The report must include information on the measures implemented by the hospital to eradicate the “threat culture”.

Additionally, the panel inquired whether the implicated doctors were afforded the opportunity to present their perspectives. A senior representative from R.G. Kar is required to appear in court in February regarding this matter. On December 6 of the previous year, Justice Sengupta’s panel had already requested a report from the R.G. Kar administration.

However, the court expressed dissatisfaction with the report provided by R.G. Kar’s legal counsel, as it did not clarify if the accused doctors were given opportunities to voice their arguments.

The controversy surrounding the “threat culture” in various state-run medical colleges and hospitals in Kolkata, including R.G. Kar, emerged following the horrific rape and murder of a female junior doctor within the hospital premises last August.

The former principal of R.G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, along with his close associates, has been identified as key figures perpetuating this threat culture.

Subsequently, several doctors accused of fostering this “threat culture” were suspended by their respective college councils. However, the court intervened and stayed many of these suspensions, citing that the accused doctors had not been permitted to present their side of the story.
