Sambhal, March 13 (NationPress) In a remarkable turn of events, the Kartikeya temple has celebrated Holi for the first time in over 40 years, bringing joy and festivity to the city. Devotees and locals joyfully smeared each other with gulal and radiant colors.
This year’s Holi celebrations at the Kartikeya temple represent a deeply significant and emotional occasion for the Hindu community as it follows a hiatus of 46 years.
Known as the Kartik Mahadev Temple or Bhasma Shankar Temple, it had remained closed since 1978 due to communal riots that affected the area. The temple reopened its doors on December 13, 2024, and many of the damaged idols were restored.
The Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) for Sambhal, Shreesh Chandra, assured the media that comprehensive security measures have been established to uphold peace and harmony during the Holi festivities.
Addressing concerns regarding potential tensions arising from the concurrent observance of Holi and Ramzaan ‘Jumma’, he stated that police are closely monitoring the situation to ensure safe and smooth celebrations for both communities.
“We are keeping check on all activities via CCTV cameras. Drones have been deployed to monitor the situation,” said ASP Shreesh Chandra.
“People can enjoy the Holi festival without any worries. There is no need for concern. Police personnel are present in sufficient numbers and are well-equipped to manage any incidents,” he added.
The temple, located in the Khaggu Sarai area of Sambhal, is situated just over a kilometer from the Shahi Jama Masjid, where violence erupted last year during a protest regarding a court-monitored mosque survey.
Additionally, the district administration has covered at least ten mosques along the route of the ‘Chaupai’ processions with tarpaulin in anticipation of Holi.
This decision was reached after discussions among the religious leaders of both communities, mediated by the police, to prevent any potential disruptions by troublemakers.
