India's $9 billion Great Nicobar outpost targets Malacca Strait security

India is advancing a $9 billion infrastructure project on Great Nicobar Island, positioning the remote Andaman and Nicobar territory as a strategic outpost near one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints — the Strait of Malacca. The move marks a significant expansion of India's defence footprint in the Indo-Pacific, according to a report published around 10 May 2025.

What the Project Entails

The Great Nicobar Island development plan includes an international container trans-shipment terminal, a dual-use civil and military airport, a power plant, and a township. Analysts note that expanding existing airstrips will facilitate operations of fighter jets and surveillance aircraft, while new jetties and logistics hubs are expected to significantly bolster naval operations in the region.
