India passenger vehicle sales hit 4.7 lakh units in July, up 33% on GST relief
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
India's passenger vehicle market recorded robust sales of nearly 4.7 lakh units in July 2025, driven by tax relief measures and GST 2.0-related benefits, according to industry data. This compares with approximately 3.5 lakh units sold in the same month last year — a year-on-year surge of roughly 33 per cent.
Record-Breaking Numbers Across the Board
Maruti Suzuki India crossed the 2 lakh unit threshold in domestic dispatches for the first time ever in a single month, clocking total sales of 2,41,421 units in July — up from 1,80,526 units in July last year. Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing and Sales at Maruti Suzuki India, confirmed the industry-wide estimate of 4.65 lakh to 4.7 lakh units for July.
Hyundai Motor India posted its highest-ever monthly sales since inception at 75,360 units, a 25.4 per cent year-on-year increase. Domestic sales rose 23.3 per cent to 54,210 units — its best-ever July domestic performance — while exports climbed 31.4 per cent to 21,150 units, the company's highest monthly export volume in more than 100 months.
SUVs, EVs and Exports Power the Surge
The broader industry upswing was underpinned by sustained consumer appetite for SUVs, a sharp rise in electric vehicle sales, and healthy export momentum. Kia India reported its best-ever July wholesale performance, with dispatches rising 27.4 per cent year-on-year to 28,200 units. Cumulative dispatches for January–July stood at 1,91,949 units, up 16.8 per cent from the year-ago period.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) reported total sales of 63,760 units across domestic and international markets in July — a 59 per cent jump from 40,175 units in the year-ago period. Domestic passenger vehicle sales alone stood at 62,611 units, up 58 per cent.
Nissan Logs 218% Domestic Surge
Nissan Motor India recorded its highest-ever monthly wholesale volumes, with total dispatches rising to 9,339 units. Domestic wholesales surged 218 per cent year-on-year to 4,518 units, while exports stood at 4,821 units. The triple-digit domestic growth underscores how GST 2.0 benefits appear to have disproportionately accelerated demand at the entry and mid-segment levels where Nissan competes.
What Comes Next
This is the strongest July performance the Indian passenger vehicle segment has recorded in recent memory, and it arrives at a moment when automakers are expanding EV lineups and export capacity simultaneously. Analysts will watch whether the momentum sustains into the festive season, which typically begins in September–October and is historically the industry's highest-volume quarter. Should demand hold, full-year wholesale figures could comfortably exceed prior records.
