Passport fees hiked from July 1: New charges for fresh, Tatkaal, renewal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Ministry of External Affairs has revised its passport fee structure, making passport-related services costlier across all categories with effect from 1 July 2026. The hike covers fresh applications, renewals, Tatkaal services, replacement of lost or damaged passports, police clearance certificates (PCC), and other passport-linked documentation — for both applicants within India and Indian citizens abroad.
New Fee Structure for Adults
For adult applicants, the fee for a fresh 36-page passport (normal category) or renewal has been raised from ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 — a hike of ₹1,000. The fee for a 60-page passport under the normal category has gone up from ₹2,000 to ₹3,500.
Under the Tatkaal scheme, a 36-page adult passport will now cost ₹5,000, up from ₹3,500, while the 60-page Tatkaal passport has been revised from ₹4,000 to ₹6,000. For replacement passports due to loss or damage, the charge for a 36-page passport has jumped from ₹3,000 to ₹5,000, and for a 60-page passport from ₹3,500 to ₹6,000. The steepest single hike is in the Tatkaal replacement category for a 60-page adult passport, which rises from ₹5,500 to ₹8,500.
Higher Charges for Minors
Passport services for children below 18 years will also become costlier. A 36-page fresh or reissue passport for minors under the normal category will now cost ₹1,750, up from ₹1,000. The same passport under the Tatkaal category will cost ₹4,250, revised upward from ₹3,000.
For replacement of a lost or damaged passport for minors, the normal-category fee has been fixed at ₹4,250, while the Tatkaal replacement for minors will now cost ₹6,750.
PCC and Miscellaneous Services
Charges for miscellaneous passport services — including police clearance certificates (PCC) and other passport-related documentation such as surrender certificates — have been raised from ₹500 to ₹750.
Overseas Applicants and Discounts
Indian citizens applying through missions and consulates abroad will follow a separate fee structure. A fresh 36-page passport abroad under the normal category has been fixed at $125, while the Tatkaal category for the same will cost $250.
A 10% discount on fresh passport applications will continue for children below eight years of age and senior citizens above 60 years. However, this concession will not apply to passport reissue applications. The revised fees apply to all applications submitted on or after 1 July 2026, whether filed domestically or overseas.
The revision marks the first broad-based passport fee revision in several years and is expected to affect millions of applicants annually, given India's consistently high passport issuance volumes.
