Why Does India Exhibit Greater Optimism and Trust for AI Than the West?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 18 (NationPress) In terms of artificial intelligence, India exhibits significant confidence and trust, contrasting with the apprehensive stance of many Western nations, stated former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday.
Sunak highlighted the necessity for tailored governance strategies to bridge this divide.
"I believe that addressing this confidence gap is as much about policy as it is about technology," he remarked during a discussion with Meta’s Chief AI Officer, Alexandr Wang, at the ongoing ‘India AI Impact Summit 2026’ in New Delhi.
"Globally, we observe varying perspectives on AI. In nations like India, there exists tremendous optimism and trust, whereas in Western countries, anxiety remains predominant regarding AI," he shared with attendees.
Sunak emphasized that India is a nation with “vast digital aspirations and capabilities,” highlighting the remarkable scale of recent investments in AI technology.
This year, "the major AI enterprises are poised to invest 20 times more in advancing this technology compared to what the US allocated for the Manhattan Project (to develop the nuclear bomb)," he pointed out.
According to Wang, "we are currently at a thrilling juncture for technology. I believe we are on the brink of a genuine acceleration in AI advancements."
He praised India’s ascent within the global AI landscape, describing it as "a very encouraging case study."
“There are now more consumer AI startups in India than in the United States,” he noted.
Wang affirmed that AI is transitioning into a new era.
“We have truly entered a completely new paradigm—the age of recursive self-enhancement,” he stated, adding that productivity has surged significantly.
AI models are increasingly facilitating the rapid development of subsequent AI technologies.
The 'India AI Impact Summit 2026' is taking place at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from February 16 to 20, gathering policymakers, industry leaders, academics, innovators, and representatives from civil society from around the globe.
