Piyush Goyal: India Secures Premier US Trade Deal Among Competitors
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 2 (NationPress) According to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, India has secured the 'best' trade agreement with the US among its rivals, placing the nation in a favorable position with this pact. In a media briefing regarding the recent 14th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Cameroon, he emphasized that India deserves 'preferential market access' within the bilateral trade arrangement established with the United States.
This preferential market access allows for exemptions from tariffs on specific product categories.
On February 2, India finalized an interim trade agreement with the US, significantly reducing tariffs from 50% to 18%.
However, these tariffs were later deemed 'illegal' by a nine-judge bench in the US on February 20, coinciding with the Trump administration's announcement of an immediate 10% tariff on all trading partners.
Despite ongoing geopolitical challenges, discussions between India and the US for a mutually advantageous bilateral trade deal continue. Both nations are diligently working towards a trade agreement that would foster economic collaboration and benefit businesses in both countries.
Moreover, India and the US are enhancing their diplomatic and economic ties across various sectors, such as trade, defense, and supply chain collaboration.
Goyal reiterated India's stance on agriculture, advocating for a lasting solution regarding public stockholding and the Special Safeguard Mechanism during the WTO ‘MC14’ conference.
“The Modi administration is dedicated to safeguarding the interests of farmers and ensuring food security. India is committed to doing what is right,” stated the minister.
He also mentioned India's opposition to plurilateral agreements like the Investment Facilitation for Development (IFD) Agreement, arguing against their integration into the WTO framework without adequate safeguards and consensus during WTO MC14.
During the conference, Goyal underscored India's proactive role in the ongoing discussions surrounding WTO reforms while prioritizing the welfare of citizens, particularly farmers and fishermen.
“India remains committed to a fair, transparent, and rules-based multilateral trading system,” he remarked.
He also highlighted that India has been practicing sustainable fishing methods for centuries.
“India seeks fair, development-oriented outcomes that significantly benefit our fishing community,” concluded the minister during his address.
