New Delhi, April 29 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, together with Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling for an urgent special session of both Houses of Parliament following the heinous terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
The attack, claimed by 'The Resistance Front', a splinter group of the outlawed Pakistan-based terror organization Lashkar-e-Taiba, involved terrorists firing on a group of tourists in the Baisaran Valley, resulting in 26 fatalities and numerous injuries, including that of a Nepali national.
In his correspondence dated April 28, Gandhi emphasized the imperative for Parliament to exhibit solidarity and determination in the face of this brutal assault on civilians.
"The terrorist incident in Pahalgam has stirred outrage among all Indians. In these crucial moments, India must illustrate our unwavering unity against terrorism. The Opposition advocates for a special session of both Houses of Parliament so that we can collectively affirm our unity and resolve," he stated.
Kharge, also the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, resonated with Gandhi's call, insisting on convening a special session as a demonstration of unified strength.
"In times when unity and solidarity are paramount, the Opposition believes it is vital to hold a special session of both Houses of Parliament promptly. This would serve as a potent affirmation of our collective will to confront the heinous terror attack on the innocent citizens of Pahalgam on April 22, 2025. We sincerely hope that the session will be organized in due course," Kharge's letter expressed.
On Monday, RJD Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha also wrote to Prime Minister Modi, requesting the convening of a Special Session to tackle urgent national security concerns stemming from the recent Pahalgam attack.
Expressing profound concern, Jha noted in his letter: “As a concerned citizen of India, touched by the severity of the recent attack in Pahalgam, I believe that our Parliament, as the foundation of our Republic and the highest platform for democratic discourse, must be the venue for voicing the anxieties, hopes, and resolve of our populace.”
He urged the Prime Minister to organize a session dedicated solely to an open and principled discussion on the Pahalgam attack and its wider implications for the security, welfare, and aspirations of the Indian people. Such a session would convey a powerful and reassuring message that our democracy remains resilient and that our commitment to every part of our union, especially those most impacted by violence, is steadfast.
The Central government briefed leaders of various political parties on the Pahalgam terror attack during an all-party meeting led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and addressed by Home Minister Amit Shah.
Rahul Gandhi, who participated in the meeting, expressed full support for the government's intended actions.
The Congress party pledged its complete backing to seek justice for the innocent civilians killed in Pahalgam by the terrorists.
