IPL cricketer Abishek Porel arrested on rape charges in Hooghly
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengal and Delhi Capitals cricketer Abishek Porel was arrested on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, by the Hooghly district police in connection with a criminal case alleging rape, criminal intimidation, and related offences, filed by a medical student from Karnataka. The arrest followed a Calcutta High Court order after the complainant alleged police inaction on her original complaint lodged in June 2026.
The Allegations
A young medical student filed a complaint at the Mogra police station in Hooghly on 23 June, alleging that Porel had been in a relationship with her for approximately three and a half years, during which he allegedly engaged in a sexual relationship under a false promise of marriage, subjected her to assault, and committed criminal intimidation. The complainant alleged the two had travelled abroad together and had even discussed marriage before the relationship deteriorated roughly one and a half years ago.
Porel had denied all allegations at the time the complaint was first filed.
Court Intervention and Arrest
After the complainant alleged that police failed to act on her complaint, she approached the Calcutta High Court. In an order dated 14 July, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya directed police to continue efforts to apprehend Porel and another accused. The court also ordered the seizure of electronic devices to prevent the alleged dissemination of private material linked to the complainant.
Acting on the court's directions, the Hooghly Rural police, led by Superintendent of Police Kunwar Bhushan Singh, arrested Porel from Emami City under the Dum Dum police station jurisdiction on Tuesday.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
The case — registered as Mogra PS Case No. 346/26 — invokes Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with sexual intercourse obtained through a false promise of marriage, along with Sections 66E and 72 of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000.
Later on Tuesday, Porel was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court in Chinsurah, Hooghly. His lawyers applied for bail, but the court rejected the application and remanded him to police custody for three days.
Who Is Abishek Porel
Porel is a prominent figure in Bengal cricket — a left-handed wicketkeeper-batter who made his first-class debut for Bengal during the 2021-22 season. He subsequently earned India A call-ups and joined the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2023, remaining with the franchise since. The arrest marks a significant development for a cricketer regarded as one of Bengal's more promising talents in recent years.
The case is at an early stage; the investigation is ongoing and Porel has not been convicted of any offence.
