The tragic event transpired on Tuesday night close to Kansai Halt station in Medinipur, West Midnapore district, as he was traveling home to Bankura with his mother.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel have since recovered the body.

The deceased has been identified as Soham Patra, a third-year student specializing in printing technology at Jadavpur University.

Soham hailed from the vicinity of Bankura police station.

According to police reports, Soham and his mother boarded the Howrah-Adra Rani Shiromani passenger train on Tuesday night.

As reported by Kharagpur GRP sources, Soham jumped into a river from the bridge situated between Kansai Halt and Medinipur stations.

Despite extensive searches in the river and the station area, the passenger was initially unaccounted for.

On Wednesday, authorities discovered the body floating in the river and were promptly notified.

Officers from Kharagpur Police Station retrieved the body and dispatched it for a post-mortem examination.

The police suspect that the student may have succumbed to depression.

Following the recovery of the body, Soham's father, Deepak Kumar Patra, stated, "I can't comment on the situation at this time. The police will clarify what transpired. We harbor no suspicions."

Conversely, Soham's mother remarked, "My son was in his third year. There was no possibility of ragging. He was well-liked by everyone. It appears he took his own life, but we are unsure of what led him to this decision."

A senior officer from Kharagpur Police confirmed that a case of unnatural death has been filed.
