A sharp political controversy has broken out in Jharkhand after an audio clip allegedly featuring Jharkhand Loktantrik Kranti Morcha (JLKM) chief and Dumri MLA Jairam Mahto abusing and threatening Barwaadda police station in-charge Ravi Kumar went viral on social media. The incident, centred in Dhanbad, has triggered an FIR against Mahto and drawn furious reactions from police associations across the state.

How the Confrontation Unfolded

The sequence of events began when police detained JLKM leader Ganesh Das on 21 August in connection with a case involving the alleged use of forged letterheads, signatures, and official seals in the name of Yashoda Devi, head of Barapichhari Panchayat. According to investigators, the forged documents were reportedly being used to obtain caste certificates, residential certificates, and genealogy certificates.

After learning of Das's detention, Mahto allegedly reached the Barwaadda police station late at night accompanied by supporters. Police allege that a commotion broke out inside the station premises and that an attempt was made to forcibly secure Das's release.

The Viral Audio and FIR

Amid the confrontation, an audio recording of an alleged WhatsApp call between Mahto and station in-charge Ravi Kumar surfaced on social media. In the clip, the MLA is allegedly heard using abusive language and issuing threats to the officer. The authenticity of the audio has not been independently verified.

Station in-charge Ravi Kumar subsequently filed an FIR naming Mahto alongside nine others — Dilip Choudhary, Sushil Mandal, Mahendra Saw, Rajkumar Mandal, Jitendra Hazari, Ajay Das, Golak Mahato, Ranjit Kumar, and Rajesh Mahato — along with 40 to 50 unidentified supporters. Charges include obstructing government work, threatening a police officer, creating a disturbance on police station premises, unlawful assembly, and spreading rumours on social media.

MLA Mahto's Counter-Allegations

Mahto has flatly rejected the police version, describing the episode as a political conspiracy. He maintained that he had visited the station solely to inquire about alleged police brutality against one of his workers. The JLKM chief further alleged that individuals inside the station attacked him and attempted to strangle him, and that a supporter was robbed of a gold chain and cash during the incident. Mahto has demanded a probe and called for CCTV footage from the station premises to be reviewed to determine what actually occurred.

Police Associations Warn of Protest

The alleged threatening conduct has drawn strong condemnation from police bodies. The Jharkhand Police Association and the Jharkhand Police Men's Association have demanded legal action free of political pressure. Both organisations have warned that if strict action against the MLA is not forthcoming, officers will begin wearing black badges in protest, followed by a phased movement and a potential work boycott.

Investigation Under Way

Police are currently examining CCTV footage from the Barwaadda station and surrounding areas to identify those involved in the incident. The case has become a focal point of political discussion in Dhanbad and across Jharkhand's state-level political circles.
